Chapter 15

Tonight’s party is for the architects and interior designers who are coming in from all over to have a look at the building. These are honestly my least favorite of the four parties that open any Griffin building, and not just because they’re super formal. I always feel like the professionals find me lacking. Normally I have Owen at my side, to calm me down and tell me how wonderful I am. Of course that isn’t possible tonight, so I’m going to go into battle with a killer dress as my shield.

Chloe helped me pick out a long bandage style dress with a fringe overlay. The fringe drapes over the front and back of the sleeveless gown, and then wraps around diagonally across one side. It’s a cream color, and she found me some crystal encrusted heels to wear with it. I have my hair in a French twist with a few curls hanging down, and I think I look pretty good. Sophisticated, yet not too uptight.

Owen is in a tux and, as usual, he looks good enough to eat. His hair is intentionally messy and I, well, I don’t want to leave his studio. But duty calls, and we get into the limo with Alex and Luke, after some pictures again.

The party is even worse than I expected, if you can believe that. As soon as the four of us enter, the whispers begin. Owen and I have to split up immediately as these people are out for blood. Our blood. So many of them are jealous of the Griffin family, and would love nothing more than a scandal. We aren’t going to help fuel the fires started by lazy, insecure idiots.

I stay close to Luke, Alex, and Maggie. Chloe and I meet up a couple of times, but she’s in demand as everyone who shunned her last year now wants to talk to her. The scandal they all ate up was exposed for the blackmail and lies that it was, so now those hypocrites are trying to pretend it never happened. Chloe hasn’t forgotten, and neither has Ryan. I see him watching carefully to make sure nothing and no one upsets her. They’re a great couple and I’m a little jealous, because I know that no matter what happens, my man won’t be able to defend me.

“Well, if it isn’t the little photographer. We told you Owen would get tired of you, but I didn’t think he’d get engaged to someone else so soon. Of course, she’s infinitely more suitable than you are.”

I turn and see one of the local socialites standing behind me. Despite being married to a local architect, I’ve seen her gaze turn hungry whenever she sees Owen. She’s always been jealous of me, and I’ve wondered if maybe Owe fucked her in the past, but I’ve never really cared too much. We both slept with people we didn’t care about, but that’s nothing to be jealous about. What we have with each other is so much more.
